It's Sunday morning, and everyone is slowly waking up. It gets bright around 5:30 am, so its tough to sleep very late, and Becky is baking muffins. The sweet smells, the loud birds, noise from traffic, and the bright sun usually all combine to be a fairly effective alarm :)
Our plan today is to eat breakfast together, and then head to
La Fraternidad Cristiano de Guatemala. This is a very large church not far from where we are staying. The church can hold about 12,000 people, but about 3,500 come to each service on Sunday mornings. The music is very upbeat, the pastor speaks Spanish that is clear and easy to understand, and the people are very welcoming. They also provide headsets that translate the service into English. Admittedly, this is not a typical Guatemalan church. However, it is a nice way to kick off the week. Singing upbeat songs, seeing a little bit more of the city, and slowly getting adjusted to the culture.

After church, we will have lunch at the ministry house, and then prepare for our time with the kids this afternoon. Yesterday we were able to sort out all the supplies we brought into separate suitcases. This afternoon we will probably take some time to run through the "VBS" / "Kid's Program" all together as a team. We need to practice songs, explain the games, and assign some tasks to each team member.
Then, this afternoon we get to see the kids!! We'll be going to La Primavera, the squatter settlement, around 4pm. We'll play with the kids for about an hour, and then participate in the "Sunday School" lesson, basically a short teaching from Oscar and Telma, the local missionaries, along with some singing and activities. We hope to distribute some flip flops this afternoon to the kids who come to the Sunday afternoon church as well.
Tonight, we'll have dinner, a team meeting, prep for tomorrow and hopefully get another good night's sleep. We appreciate everyone's prayers, thoughts, and messages through facebook and on the blog.
